Default a/c on-off-on-off

Hi. I've been reading up about intermittent problems with heating fans, dodgy solder joints on pots, the resistor behind the glove box and faulty a/c control boards. I'm none the wiser as to where to start.

Symptoms: All works fine, a/c light green, fan running. Then suddenly a/c light turns red and fan stops blowing. Then it goes back to working fine. Then it stops again. When it stops working, the fan stops: no variation, it's either on (to whatever it's set to) or off. If I switch off a/c, I get the same effect, i.e. the fan stops blowing, but the a/c light stays red.

Should I start by resoldering the pot joints and checking their operation, or should I start with the resistor under the glove box?
