The ones I have seen (used by VOLVO and others) is a sort of small kettle element that "screwed/pushed" into a core plug space in the block. Usually for connection to a 240v supply from a post outside of work or home.
In your scenario it's a 12v supply that would be quite a current draw. Also there has to be a water pump somewhere for circulation because where it is won't heat up much of the coolant system just by convection.
