I understand that the rocker cover gasket is prone to leakage on the VEA Diesel engine, but whether or not this will cause a loss of 0.5 litre every 1,000 or 1,500 miles isn’t clear to me.
The piston ring problem is, I believe, more related to the third ring, i.e. the oil control ring.
As JamboT knows, I’m currently trying to establish the root cause of the oil control ring drain holes becoming blocked (via a thread under “Diesel Engines”), but the issue is possibly too widespread to be explained just by occasional example of the use of the wrong grade oil. My car has now started to use a lot more oil after 130k uneventful miles, but it has only be serviced by Volvo dealers and a leading Volvo specialist.
@Nowayout. Have you needed to top up the oil? If so, are you able to say how often and how much oil was required?
