linkage ?
are you aware a linkage runs from the bottom of the gearstick to the gearbox?
these are prone to wear and are virtually never lubricated and when worn or loose can prevent you selecting gears as the actual selector mecanism isnt in proper position.
Take a look underneath and see if all looks ok without any loose pins, wear or siezing up first.
