If conditions get really difficult (and only then) you can select Off-Road mode using the Drive Mode selector if fitted.

This forces all-wheel drive on, disables stop-start and engages LSC (Low Speed Control) and HDC (Hill Descent Control). You really need to read the manual to understand when and how to use it and its limitations.

As it happens, I used it last weekend at a friend's house to descend a long, steep driveway that was covered in thick mud from building work he's having done.
