Must be an alignment issue, especially if it worn on one edge. The tyre could have been low in tread, but even still, it shouldn't wear down to the cords in one spot.
Tyres shouldn't wear unevenly if they're properly inflated and the alignment is within spec.
Sounds like some suspension work needs doing. Play in suspension components like control arms and worn out shocks can lead to premature tyre wear. If there's play in suspension, the alignment simply can't be right.
