Here we go - this is the release pull in my '96 850 estate. Excuse the grubby carpet, its going to get removed and scrubbed clean this summer!
Looking at your pic, there are some scratches in that area - I wonder if a previous owner had some issues with the flap and removed it (the release pull) at some point? Still worth checking behind that carpet though to see what is there.
