Probably not best technique but managed to get a 2.0D started after fuel filter change without using a primer.

Technique was to:
Fill the new filter with fuel before install
Disconnect the fuel line, lift it up in the air and drip fuel in until line is full
Finger on end and reconnect
Start car and rev hard until new fuel is pulled through

Not ideal but needs must at the time, small priming pump defiantly better
