A quick way to check for recalls in the UK is to use the DVLA web site. Check something like 'is my car taxed' or 'is the mot' valid. In amongst all of the stuff on the side you will be invited to check for recalls on your car.
I also run a BMW and I received a letter from them recently with a thick red border around the envelope. That's a serious recall.
