Answer to question 1.....Yes, why not? For the amount they cost they are a sound investment. As Wagon Sailor said, if someone is REALLY determined they won't necessarily stop them, though it will slow them down, but unless you have a really exceptional car would they bother?
Answer to question 2.....I have a Krooklock on both of my cars, (bought them back in the 1970's and 80's). Although they are not "big and bold" as WS suggested, (and I can understand his reasoning), they are easily stored beside the driver's seat when not in use.
