I found this in my pc library, I think it's originally from the 1800list,hth.

Headliner Installation Instructions
1973 1800 ES

While this installation instruction sheet is for a 1973 1800 ES, it has many valuable pointers for any late model Volvo 1800. I have compiled my observations and recollections of the proper installation. Others have contributed in part through their observations and actual hands on participation. I would like to offer my many thanks to them for their help.

Installation Materials

Headliner

Installation Tools

Small hand-held Hairdryer
Small Putty Knife
Phillips Head Screw Driver
Flat Head Screw Driver
Latex Gloves
Wood Shims (as temporary wedges)

Installation Steps

-Photograph every inch of the headliner prior to removal of the old headliner
-Disconnect battery
-Remove front seats (optional but suggested)
-Remove the sun visors, rearview mirror and dome lights (photograph wire connections and wrap electrical tape around the feeds to the dome lights in case you accidentally reconnect the battery)
-Begin the removal process anywhere along the edges but would suggest at a long side
-Photograph the edges, foam spacer placements and exposed visor/rearview mirror fastening holes
-Print photos to refer to later during installation
-Mark the bows so you place them in the same sleeve position in the new headliner
-Keep the old headliner to compare to the new (or for reinstall in the event you tear the new headliner)
-The new headliner from Vintage Import Parts (Canada) was a good match except the “Keeper trim” was not molded and did not have the radius at the curved corners as was the case with the OEM headliner. Be sure to compare your new headliner with your original prior to moving forward.
-Have a friend available to pull and tug when fitting the “keeper trim” into the body flange
-Insert the bows into the sleeves of the headliner (be sure they are oriented properly and in the correct sleeve)
-Wash your hands!
-At the front and rear of the headliner, mark the centers on the headliner (No. 2 Pencil) as well as on a visible portion of the body. You can use the rear view mirror holes at the front and the dome light at the rear as reference points for your marks on the body.
-At the front, set the center and feed 10 inches into the body flange
-Warm the headliner with a hairdryer along its center length (Friend)
-Hold up headliner in the center (Friend) while you……
-Set 10-15 inches of the headliner in the center rear
-Set 10 inches more on both sides of the front
-Set 10 inches more on both sides of the rear
-Fold down the rear seat
-At 5 inches from the passenger side rear radius, set 10 -15 inches toward the front
-At 5 inches from the drivers side rear radius, set 10 -15 inches toward the front
-Again at the passenger side, set the remainder “keeper track” to within 5 inches of the front radius
-Again at the driver side, set the remainder “keeper track” to within 5 inches of the front radius
-At the 4 radius corners, barely make cuts with a utility knife in the keeper at 3-4 locations, equally spaced, with the first and last just within the radius.
-Warm the corners and within 12 inches with the hair drier
-Install front driver’s side corner hardest as steering wheel is in the way (putty knife or flat heal “L” screwdriver for setting “keeper trim” and wood shims to hold as wedges will be most helpful here)
-Install the rear passenger’s corner
-Install the front passenger’s corner
-Install the rear driver’s corner
-Clean headliner
-Locate holes for visors and rearview mirror. Punch holes with a sharp pencil (As headliner is stretched and in place, holes should line up thereafter)
-Install visors and rear view mirror
-Locate dome light positions and perform a “X” cut (diagonal) from inside corners of dome light edge. Do not over cut.
-Install dome lights
-Reinstall front seats (if they were removed to make room during installation)
-Re-connect battery

Good luck to you all
