Problem fixed! replaced the EGR valve again and the problem has gone! Thanks for your help
As I bought the new considerably more expensive EGR Valve it came with a note explaining the differences in the electronics between some identical looking EGR valves. This I did not know about and is obviously where I got caught out.
I'll attach the file for those that might find it useful.
