It was my inner passenger side CV joint that failed. I'm not aware that the passenger side is more prone to failure. The C70 / C30 CV joints are prone to failure - it's not an uncommon problem.
As you say, better than a torque converter problem but still expensive parts wise. I opted for a whole new driveshaft.
