There's a solution to all of that, and it comes with 8 cylinders and a sports suspension - if you're ok with 18 MPG average urban and knowing every local pothole intimately.
More seriously, I agree with XC90Mk1. I can't imagine the manual XC90 being any more of an 'involving' drive than the auto counterpart to any real extent, given the other dominant aspects of its personality. Automatic problems occur but generally a recon unit doesn't seem to cost more than I've paid in the past for a combined clutch and DMF replacement on a V70 manual.
These cars are very suited to automatic transmission, which I guess is why so many of them were sold in that configuration.
