Isn't it funny how 'hand tight' on never seems to equal 'hand tght' off! I've done this with 2 tools.
1. Traditional chain.
2. Fabric strap version of the chain tool.
The fabric one was much easier to use and gripped well. It was also much easier to get it in place. The chain version also worked well but needed a lot more jiggling to get it to lock in the correct orientation to be useable.

It's a clever design that you could probably replicate with a fabric belt and a screwdriver.
