I managed to get the sprocket off the front of the crankshaft so I could carry on with the front end rebuild.

There was quite a build up of carbon and old oil under the front crank housing.

I hadn't finished cleaning it when I took this photo hence why there is still some gasket and oil staining on the mating face.

The front crank seal had been replaced at some point and hadn't been seated properly.

I then moved on to the rear crank housing gasket and seal

I then managed to get the very stuck thermostat out and cleaned it up ready for the new seal. The thermostat on Alan's engine was recently replaced so I will be using that when his car arrives.

There is a bit of pitting on the mating face but I've seen a lot worse still hold coolant so I'm not worried about it, I'll see if Alan's is any better when it arrives and if so I will use his one as this engine is being built to last a long time!

I then spent an hour scrubbing the head with my chemical concoctions to try and clean it.
