Why would it be bought in the UK and first registered in Germany, surely with the huge savings available to Military personnel in Germany it would have made more sense to be bought over there.

It is possible it was bought in Germany and stored for 6 months before being brought to the UK to be sold. At one time buying in Germany and selling in the UK was a lucrative business as the savings were massive. It only took 2 or 3 cars bought and sold to allow 'one' to get a 'free car' and plenty jumped onto that bandwagon.

In the 70s and 80s it was a free for all but the laws changed in the 90s for these sort of transactions where the original purchaser had to keep their new car for 6 months before being allowed to sell them on. Garages, lock-ups, driveways in the German barracks were stuffed full of brand new Volvos, BMWs, Mercedes, Audis until their 6 months were up. Car dealers in the UK often paid the train fares back to Germany and everyone made a lot of money...
