I had my ABL stop working once, due to a software update at regular service. First time I drove in the dark after that I was worried for a while why the light seemed so bad. I wondered if it was my eyes, until I realized that ABL didn't work. Volvo had changed how you needed to set some switch for it to work.
Nobody liked the change, it seems, because it went back to the original function again later.

There was an update where the ABL function was disabled when the headlight position was at "0" but the headlights were on as they were the DRL'.
