It's not any larger mystery that Volvo sells the Polestar upgrade than that they sell different models to begin with.
That same engine has been available with 163, 181, 205, 215, 220 and 230 horsepowers in Sweden. At least, maybe I've forgot some. There were some other levels that had a simpler ECM earlier.
Since you as an afterthought can add Polestar and send a 163 hp engine to 215 hp (i.e. make a D5 of a D3) or change a 181 hp to a 220 hp (i.e. make a D4 become a newer D5), it's obvious it's the same hardware.
How much power you want is up to what you are willing to pay. Some options are different models from start, some are a Polestar install away.
It's similar to that you today, on the heavy side, can buy a Scania with the same 16-liter V8 engine with 530, 590, 660 or 770 hp. Pick your choice, pay at the register.
