Took the recommendation and contacted Volvo Poole and limped the car there yesterday. Impressed!
Fault found, a damaged wire leading to the fuel control valve. Will be replaced today, all sorted for less than £120. Picking up this evening.
Discovered that if get servicing done with them, not only are prices competitive but gain 12 months of 24/7/365 Volvo assist breakdown service. Thus don't need RAC/AA. Also the car is fully washed, which we often get done elsewhere. So, when taken in total, the offer is compelling. Plus access to loan cars when available.

Glad you got it sorted. Have used Poole Volvo for a few years and always found them very good.
