Sprout99 - I think you have hit the nail on the head here. Recent reviews of the Honda CRV 1.6d have said your exact comments. Any proposed mpg savings are ruined as you are having to work the engine so hard. In addition will the engine that has to work harder, as the 1.6d inevitably has to, last as long as the one that manages with less fuss? Surely not.
In the V60 section there is a spread of owners who have the D2, D3 and D4 engines. The mpg difference between us all is minimal but I think I know who is travelling in more comfort and style.
