Hi ASt85, Thanks for your comments / suggestions as always. I know the sound you mean as I had that when I previously replaced the starter motor on this car, several years back. I am pretty sure I fitted the timing belt correctly. Also, surely if that was the cause it would be there more often than just on start-up? I have recently done what SteveSarre kindly suggested, ie I started the car without using the starter motor (by rolling down a hill and engaging the clutch), there is no sound (i immediately switched off and restarted with the starter motor and the sound was back). So, I am very much thinking this sound relates to the operation of the starter motor, perhaps the solenoid failing to properly withdraw the pinion.
