Anyway car is now fixed and all is well but when I ordered the new clutch kit and slave cylinder from volvo, the new slave cylinder is an updated version as my garage noticed that it was quite different from the previous version and only requires 1 bolt to hold it instead of 2, but a phone call to volvo confirmed it was the correct part for the car and was an updated part so not sure if this is a common issue. Will also include some pics of the updated slave cylinder which is part no 31325023 and the failed one hope this helps anyone with a similar issue 👍
no not common but it can happen occasionally on random S40/V50/C30/C70 versions out there on the road . One cause is overheating when someone cooks the clutch .
