That's really no longer true of the top flight boots. The CrossClimates and Nokian Weatherproof perform admirably in all conditions, and only really give up a little ground when driving hard in hot weather. 90% of the time they perform better than the typical summer boot, and in the snow they're as capable as all but the very best specialist snow rubber, which aren't freely available in the UK anyway. They're no longer a compromise, and these days are a viable all year round option with favourable wear and performance characteristics.
