I also belive you don't have to use genuine parts.

The warranty will still be valid - it's up to the dealer to show that the parts used caused whatever failure you are claiming for on Warranty, if they can't then the warranty stands.

At the end of the day the service is only a few tanks of fuel.
The dealers - and some indy specialists do more than just a service. They will perform software updates/ replace parts as detailed by Volvo which are known to fail prematurely rather than wait for you to report it and claim under warranty.
If you ask a dealer for a itemised list of all the work done on the vehicle you may be surprised.
