Well today I've checked each wheel in turn with the car in neutral. There is no detectable play or noise present when rotating in either direction. Also did a test drive and direction changes make no increase/decrease in the sound. All I can currently go on is that from within the cabin the whine appears to come from the front passenger side - so either front left bearing or gearbox issue.
I tend to maintain my vehicles myself, but do garages have any specialist equipment to aid diagnosis -I.e. A sound monitor of some sorts that can be placed on the hubs while driving?
