Not sure it is the correct decision, but I looked at what I could get if I spent the repair cost + scrap value and decided I’d rather have my own car back, as something else may have equivalent unknown problems.
I hope it works out for you. If the rest of the car is strong you may well have made the right decision.

I guess I'm a pessimist as I know I'll fix one thing and something even more expensive will go bang!
