I suspect age has something to do with it in both directions, those of us who are older grew up with simple to fix cars which a lot of people would have done a lot of work themselves even if they were not enthusiasts, younger people have had cars with increasing levels of complexity that put off the amateur. On the flip side as I get older the prospect of rolling around on the cold hard garage drive getting wet and dirty appeals a lot less so some jobs get sent to a trusted independent.
