The extra wear thing's a bit of a myth, they are more prone to wear because of the innate flexibility in the tread blocks (which also makes for less precise handling), but they aren't necessarily softer per se - silica compounds keep them pliable at low temps, rather than them simply being made out of mushy rubber, iyswim
