The NCAP score is a summary of many factors - including pedestrian safety, safety of occupants of other vehicles and driver aids, alertness reminders etc. It does not directly reflect only the protection that is offered to the driver and occupants of that vehicle, as highlighted in Ferg's post, and only reflects the outcome of tests in laboratory conditions.

I'm not for one minute saying the Skoda isn't a safe, formidable alternative - clearly it is, but for me it would regard the Volvo as the safer car from a driver perspective.
