Hi All,
I have been battling my problematic ETM (I think) for a while now, and I could really do with some advice. Below I have tried to list out as much as I can about the problems I am facing and what steps I have taken to resolve them. I have a couple more tests to do (listed below) when I get back to my parents where the car is being stored. Can anyone help me make an informed decision on what to do next?
Symptoms:
Pre-rebuild (ECU Testing)
- Intermittent ETS lamp and slight stumble just before illumination
- ECM-91A7
- NO limp home mode
- ECM-261A Long Term Fuel Trim, Bank 1 - Upper Limit (very intermittent - more common on LPG)
Post-rebuild (ECU Testing)
- Hunting for idle after codes cleared - settles sometimes (as it learns?)
- Surging while driving all the time
- Intermittent ETS light
- ECM-91B7
- NO limp home mode
- ECM-261A Long Term Fuel Trim, Bank 1 - Upper Limit (very intermittent)
ETM Details:

- No sweep test available (older software)
Diagnostic Steps Taken:
- Checked for MAF codes - None
- Checked for misfire codes - None
- Sent ETM to ECU Testing for rebuild
- Inbound Test - No Faults
- Rebuilt anyway (Sacer unit - not sure what else)
- Outbound Test - No Faults
- Full Battery Test (Halfords) - Battery OK
- Voltage Testing
- Pin 6 to positive battery terminal - same as battery
- Pin 5 to negative battery terminal - no resistance (good ground?)
- Cleaned Ground Connection and Refitted
- Removed and Cleaned ETM and Lubricated Shaft
- Cleaned ETM Connectors with Electrical Contact Cleaner
- Replaced Throttle Pedal with Used (EBay)
- Removed Fuse 2 (ETM Fuse) with ignition on, engine off and re-installed - Clicks once, whines, clicks again. All within 10 seconds.
- Held throttle in FIXED POSITION against a block and created the attached graph.
Note - see throttle desired position fluctuating despite pedal being in one position
Note - both throttle position potentiometers seem relatively close to each other to me?
Diagnostic Steps Remaining:
Replace Engine Management Relay
Run wire between fuse and ETM plug
Check voltage across pins 5+6
Check voltage from fuse #2 to negative battery terminal
Options Remaining:
- Return rebuilt unit for refund - still broken
- Return rebuilt unit for refund and Pay Volvo dealer for diagnostics + new ETM + fitting + software (~£500 GBP)
- Pay Volvo to install upgraded software on rebuilt unit
- Return rebuilt unit for refund, pay for XeMODeX pre-programmed replacement ($829 USD or £635.91 GBP)
- Wait for my Volvo friend to break his early 1999 V70 T5 Automatic (mine is a manual) for me to test his used ETM and Throttle Pedal - no idea when that’ll be.
