The aircon compressor doesn't work constantly. It goes on and off dependend on the pressure from the refrigerant inside the system. After a couple of years the system looses it's refrigerant, 10% loss a year is normal. So could be that the system needs refilling, it needs a fresh charge about every 2-3 years. How is the temp. of the air coming out of the vents when the airco is on full blast? Can it still keep the interior cool enough on a hot day?
