Had a look at the coils, check all the LT and HT(new) leads and there all fine. why would taking them off and cleaning the surface make a difference? The cam cover is pretty clean all round.

Disconnected the engine temp sensor, didnt make much change in the revs, the temp gauge went down when discounnected. I presume its all working correctly.

Is it worth trying the Draper HT testers? Although at the last service there were no errors on the ECU which should detect a faulty coil...
