I suspect that this may be the cause of the problem but, since I'm missing the manual, there may be another fix I'm unaware off. The key fob battery for my 1998 V70 died. On opening the door with the key the alarm went off and I couldn't find a way to stop it. Eventually it timed out. With the key fob battery replaced the problem went away.
I'm told that if the car is unlocked remotely using the fob it can then be locked and unlocked using the key without triggering the alarm, but I haven't proved this yet.
