As the symptoms are common to both fuels, the problem is more likely to be ignition-related.

Are there any warming lights showing? If the EML is on, do you have any fault codes? Don't rely on the RAC being able to read codes succesfully.

I'd be suspicious of a plug, lead or coil.

What do you mean by extra water from the exhaust? That could just be beacuse the weather's rotten just now, or it could indicate other things.

Is the coolant / oil level remaining where it should?

Is there any oil in the coolant (easy to see in the header tank as an oily film on the surface of the coolant), or water in the oil (indicated by sticky white emulsion on the dipstick or under the oil filler cap).

Does the car have a turbo?

Let us know what the RAC man says.
