Yes, the timing was out. I used a home made cam lock to the design as suggested in the Haynes manual. Unfortunatly, I made it of aluminium and this was not strong enough. It twisted when torquing the pulley.
This was proved when I started the engine which was a little rough.

To check and fix the timing, I made up a second jig - a lever to lock into the cam (lhs) with a turnbuckle attached, the other end of the turnbuckle being fixed.
I was the able to release the VVT pulley, rotate the cam and retighten the pulley.
It is running OK now.
