So I bought a new actuator from Volvo (£230).

Tip: The new actuator comes with a rubber 'blocking pad' fitted below the release mechanism (the release cable mechanism which is connected to the exterior door handle). It is not obvious and looks like part of the lock initially. You can tell when you compare the new and old units. Remember to remove this after you have fitted the actuator and connected the cables.
If you don't, the door latch will not shut (akin to holding the car door handle in the open position (which is what I think it is designed to do). And you end up taking the door apart again to remove it! (not fun).
