EGR had a bunch of fine black powder in there so I cleaned it out with EGR cleaner and put back together fine, no leaks.
Bought a fuel filter to fit but didn't want to bother unless I know it's that as that was nearly £50 from halfords on it's own. My dads mate said I also shouldn't do it because It's pressurized and I could let air into the system

It's been to the garage, a garage had it for nearly 2 months. They said the ecu was blown due to water getting in there. They found another ecu, paid a company to clone it, replaced the throttle pedal (don't know why) and it's still doing the same thing, also had a new battery at Christmas. Pulling my hair out. Been charged over £700 for what feels like nothing.

Booked in at a different garage tomorrow but would love any advice?
If the fuel filter hasn't been changed before, its definitely worth changing. I do believe the PSA engines can be a bugger to start after a filter change, some Ford's are the same. Air can get in, but you have to bleed it it out. If you aren't confident doing it, let a garage replace it for you. Dirty fuel filters can cause all sorts of problems.
