I understand caution if you are unsure. However, the tensioner in your other thread is missing the plastic cushion pad; that indicates to me it was a cowboy job.

The hydraulic tensioners are not a service item and are designed to be reset when changing belts. The procedure is to remove the tensioner and lightly clamp end to end in a vice. Then VERY SLOWLY put a little pressure on the tensioner by closing the vice. Wait a few moments and repeat. The secret is to take your time and compress the tensioner VERY SLOWLY until a pin can be inserted through the hole in the tensioner body and piston - locking the piston.

Then refit the tensioner to the engine, refit the belt and the plastic cushion pad. Then remove the pin allowing the piston to expand and tension the belt.

My previous V40 did 370,000 miles with the original hydraulic tensioner. I changed the belt every 80,000miles and no issues with the tensioner or pump.
