How is the situation with the car? It always breaks my heart when a 2/7/900 goes, as here in Portugal/Spain we see so few of them on the road.

I hope you can recover yours. Have you figured out no start thing?
First thing that came to mind was the CPS. Overheating can damage the sensor or even perhaps the wire.

EDIT: My car also overheated one time, but it was before I bought it so I don't know how bad it was. I have the receipt from the repair at the dealership and it was almost 4k€ and by the replaced parts list, it seems to have been bad. HG, machining of head, rad, etc.
In your case, the weird noises your lady describes are frightening, but lets hope for the best.
