The service its due itms the 4th service and first since we have owned it. Is this something that has to go back to deeler or can we just use our own non volvo garage for our service and mot? We are a 2hr trip to the nearest volvo dealer,

A volvo dealers service gives you free software updates, free Volvo Assistance and the chance of goodwill from Volvo if you get a major mechanical failure in the future. It also gives you a long drive and probably a full day out.
You can of course forgo the above and get an indie which will definitely be cheaper and most likely more convenient and closer. If the car is working well the software update is not necessarily that critical.
It is really up to you.
4th service on a Petrol SPA car is about 500 quid at a main dealer. It is the usual filters and spark plugs.
