I've read different things about if you clean the sensor yourself you can easily destroy it, even with using the correct aerosol cleaner so thought about getting a replacement part just in case.
But are the after market parts (going for roughly £20 on ebay) any good?

You say you have a problem with the air mass meter what makes you think that? you need to get the problem diagnosed properly rather than guess, it could be very expensive, as could "cleaning" an air mass meter.. it doesn't get dirty drawing in air filtered by the air filter. if you look at the output voltage when driving it would be more beneficial .
The cause could be all sorts of things on a 20 year old car an air leak somewhere, lambda sensors, or a seizing throttle spindle if a GDI..
