So it turned out the spring was broken in 2 places:
The break at the top shows some fresh metal with a corrosion patch, probably the defect giving rise to the weakness needed to break:
The lower break was very rusty, seemes it's been that way for some time now:
After the break the spring was held precariously by the top mount
