If I was buying ANY diesel Volvo right now, it would be a sorted 2004 Euro 3 D5 engine V70 with manual gearbox.
Obviously they are not as modern looking as V50, but they feel much better quality and more solid, and that euro 3 163 D5 engine (i must stress, EURO 3, not the later Euro 4 185) is VERY VERY economical on a cruise. You stick it in 5th gear and keep below 60mph and you wont be worrying too much about fuel bills. Absolutely excellent combination of performance, simplicity and fuel economy.
The later 180 D5 in the V50 is not as economical.
