I am pretty sure its not my DPF as the car gets driven very hard twice a day and its far to coincidental that this happen when the car in front was pluming really thick black smoke.

Ideally it needs to be checked for codes with VIDA. The DPF can fail to regenerate due to other issues (glow plugs), meaning it will continue to block despite being driven hard.
I like your thinking, however it will be no way related to the car in front
