The solution was a new engine at a cost of £8700. Fortunately I had a full Volvo service history and to be fair, the dealership were really helpful and negotiated a 90% contribution from Volvo, despite the car being more than 4 years old. Still cost me £870 though.
I now have a 12 month warranty on the engine and cooler so that gives me 12 months to decide whether to hang on or get rid.

If Volvo now have something as basic as faulty piston rings they are sunk!
