MaDProFF. Mine is an XC90 T8 too. Mine has the aux heater therefore like yours. If I click pre condition on the app and the temp is low enough then it starts to warm up the car. You hear a pump running by the drivers wheel and can sometimes smell the exhaust from it. The smell comes from the wheel area too. I thought that this is exactly what happens plugged in or not. So even if plugged in you would use fuel to heat the car and generate fumes. Are you saying that your car gets warm without any fumes from the aux heater?
