From my limited knowledge of the diseasel Volvos, i'd say that was a D24 TIC.
Where did you buy it from? Even on a private sale these days it has to be fit for purpose unless specified in writing as only fit for spares or repair.
Also be wary of the garages that tell you the engine is beyond economic repair, especially if there is a car sales attached to the place.
Would be useful to know why it overheated as well, did you check the coolant level when you picked it up and has it lost coolant on the way? Or was it already empty and you just drove it? Was the water pump drive belt tight or loose so the water pump was slipping?
