As far as I am aware the 1.5L is Volvo's own engine, it has the same specifications as the Volvo VEA 2.0L petrol but a shorter stroke to reduce the capacity to 1.5L. For some reason the geartronic versions of the V40 T2 and T3 (and I think possibly the S/V60) use a 1.5L version rather than the 2.0L used in the manual transmission cars, performance is the same for both engine sizes.
The old 1.6L petrol used in the V40 was I believe based on the Ford Ecoboost engine but from what I have read all engines from 2016 model year on are Volvo VEA.
