I had a 53 D5 that had a similar whine. After chasing the aux belt and changing the alternator bearings (made no difference) we diagnosed the aircon clutch bearing. Most people suggested a very expensive option involving a new pump.
I went to an aircon specialist in Braintree, Essex, who changed the bearing in the clutch and all was well for ever after.
